“I feel great about this season. We have made a lot of improvements and we have some new additions to the team. We came close to going to the CIAA conference tournament last season and this season we are determined to make it all the way. It’s our year,” said Jasmine Baxter.
Softball season is around the corner and yesterday the Lady Lion’s softball team started their first spring practice in preparation for the season. The softball team focused yesterday’s practice mostly on conditioning and fielding.
The team is more focused on being healthy and also improving their defense will help them go far this season.
“As a team we must trust each other to mentally approve our mental stability on the field and always give 110 percent,” said sophomore 1st basemen Jasmine Dabney.
A lot of returning players feel that this year could be the team’s breakout year, especially when it comes to the their batting average.
“We have learned to never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game,” said Dabney.
Even though the team hit an overall of .245 last season, the Lady Lions brought back two of their offensive power hitters, juniors Mariah Liberty and Erin Rucker, both who gracefully hit .393 and .317 last season.
Last year the Lady Lions had their ups and downs last year. However, going into this season the one positive that they can take away from last year is that they had a three game winning streak towards the end of last season. The Lady Lions finished the 2011 season with a record of 5-19 overall and 5-13 in conference play. Their first game on March 9, at Johnson C. Smith University.
